Fatal error: Exception code=C000005
received during importing of an Excel (.XLS) file

Importing certain Excel files with certain formatting can cause this error. The error pops up during Import Data after choosing the XLS file and then clicking on the "Next >" button.

The best way to import this file is to save it as a .CSV file first. Then import it as a text file.

To save the file as a .CSV file in Excel: (The following instructions is based on Excel 2000, other versions may vary"

From the "File" menu option, click on "Save As". This will open up the "Save As dialog box".

At the "Save as type:" field, select "CSV (Comma delimited) (*.csv)"

You may then enter a new file name or keep the default.

Click on "Save"

You will get an Excel message box saying "The selected file type does not support workbooks that contain multiple sheets." Click on "OK" to continue.

You will now get another Excel message box saying "(Filename) may contain features that are not compatible with CSV (Comma delimited)." Click on "Yes" to continue.

Close the .CSV file in Excel. This file can not be imported while it is opened in Excel.  If it asks "Do you want to save the changes....?", just click on "No" since you already have saved it.

You can now proceed to import the .CSV file.
