Text file delimiter description / Import from Excel (XLS) file

If you are importing a DBF file, you will not see this page. You may skip to the next section.

Text files - When importing a text file, you will then have to choose how the fields are separated. Your choices are Comma, Tab, Semicolon, or Space. Most text files use a comma to separate the fields. This is called a Comma-Delimited file, or CSV file. The File Preview will be updated each time you make a selection. Choose the one that lines up all the fields.

Excel files - When importing an Excel file, you will see a preview of the file. If the columns do not line up or if you get an error, it is best to open up the file in Excel and save it as a CSV file. This way any additional Excel formatting is removed and the file saved is data only.

* Some Excel files will give a "Fatal error: Exception code=C0000005" The best way to import this file is to open up the file in Excel and save it as a CSV file. Then import as a Text file. For more information click here.
